CUET UG Exam
As for the pattern, the CUET exam would be a computer-based test conducted in 13 languages by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The State/ Private / Deemed may also adopt the CUET to be Universities.
These include English, Hindi, Urdu as well as the 10 regional languages Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Assamese, Punjabi and Odia.
The University Grants Commission, on behalf of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, will conduct the Common University Entrance Test, CUET UG 2025, every year for Undergraduate Programmes in Central Universities.
NTA CUET UG
NTA will conduct the entrance examination for undergraduate UG and postgraduate PG admissions. CUET UG and CUET PG will be conducted by NTA separately. 45 Central Universities in the country have adopted the examination.
CUET Undergraduation is a common entrance test for all the central universities in the country. Students must appear in it to be admitted to the undergraduate programmes offered by 45 central universities of India.
The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) will require students to attempt 40 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) each in the language and domain subjects and 60 MCQs in the general paper. These questions will test a candidate’s general knowledge and numerical ability, among other things.
The UGC announced that central universities will admit students in undergraduate courses solely based on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) from the 2022 academic year. The examination will provide equal opportunity to students from different backgrounds and education boards.
CUET will be a mandatory test for admission to undergraduate courses at central universities. Students who want to appear for CUET UG can check the list of top central universities in India.
CUET UG Syllabus
The CUET UG syllabus will be in line with the Class 12 NCERT syllabus. It will be divided into various sections. The CUET paper pattern will be such that Section 1B will be optional for students and can be opted by students who want to choose any language other than the ones mentioned in Section 1A. In this section, questions can be expected from French, German, etc.
The other section will be the domain-specific subjects section. Here, candidates will have the liberty to choose up to 6 domains that they wish to pursue in their UG course. The paper will be held in 2 shifts for all candidates.
The three-and-a-half-hour computer-based entrance test (CUET) will only have multiple-choice questions based on the content of class 12 NCERT textbooks. It will essentially have three parts. Students will be marked negatively for incorrect answers.
Common entrance test for UG admissions
No weightage to Class 12 Board exam marks in UG admissions: From this year, admissions to undergraduate courses in 45 central universities these universities will henceforth be solely based on the CUET score.
Hence, marks secured in class 12 board exams will not carry any weightage in university admissions. However, universities can use the Board exam marks as an eligibility criterion for CUET.
No changes in the quota of reserved seats: CUET is compulsory for all 45 Central Universities funded by UGC which implies that minority institutions, like AMU and Jamia will also have to adopt the entrance test criteria for admissions.
However, UGC clarified that CUET will not affect the quota of reserved seats at such institutions, but they will have to admit all students through the common test mandatorily.
International students exempted from CUET: International students seeking admission to Indian universities are exempted from CUET. Their admissions will be carried out on the existing supernumerary basis.
Why a common entrance test?
UGC introduced a common entrance test to reduce the burden on students. Right now, students are applying to different universities and appearing in different entrance exams for undergraduate admissions.
At the same time, they also have to focus on their board exams to get 99% and 100% marks. UGC should not assume that all central universities conduct admissions based on class 12 marks. Many universities have already been conducting their entrance exams for undergraduate admissions.
Multiple exams were causing a lot of stress among the students and their parents. Another reason why NEP 2020 advocated for a one-nation, one-entrance exam was to provide equal opportunity to students from different backgrounds and different education boards. It would provide a kind of level playing field for students.
Will class 12 performance become irrelevant now?
Absolutely not. If students want to do well in CUET, they will have to acquire knowledge in school. Besides, universities will be allowed to fix their minimum qualifying criteria in terms of class 12 marks, as they are already doing.
For instance, they can say students should have maybe 50% or 60% marks in their board exams in addition to their CUET scores to enroll with them. The UGC will not fix any minimum criteria and it will be left to the universities to decide. However, to appear in CUET, students will have to just pass the class 12 examinations.
This is not a new concept. For admissions to IITs, UGC has been considering JEE scores only. The test will be based on the syllabus prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
How will it provide equal opportunity to students from other boards? The syllabus will be announced in the first week of April and the examination will be held in July.
So, there will be enough time for students to see if there is any difference between NCERT syllabus and their syllabus, and prepare for it. From next year onwards, students will already be aware of the syllabus.
How will the test facilitate the interdisciplinary movement from school to college? Students can write exams in up to six domain subjects.
They can choose the appropriate subjects as per their choice, irrespective of their domain knowledge in class 12. For instance, they can appear in business studies and political science at the same time.
Besides, universities can use the general test score for cross-disciplinary admissions. For example, if the university wants to admit students to BA political science, it doesn’t have to look for students who studied political science in class 12.
They can select students based on their general test scores. However, the individual universities will decide on these guidelines. I appeal to the universities to give students wider opportunities and make cross-disciplinary admissions easier for them.
What about skill-based courses having major practical components? For such courses, including music, painting, sculpture and theatre, the universities will be allowed to conduct practical exams or interviews along with CUET.
Is there a risk CUET will mutate into a tuition-driven competition? This apprehension is there because UGC has seen what had happened in case of the professional courses.
But UGC should understand there is huge competition in these courses, including engineering or medical [courses], due to the limited number of seats. That is why coaching has also come into the picture there.
For non-professional programmes in the university system, for which the CUET will be conducted, UGC has close to 1,050 universities, including 45 central universities.
The number of students competing for each seat here are less than those competing for the professional courses. Therefore, I do not see any need for coaching here. The syllabus will be strictly restricted to the class 12 NCERT books.
How will it affect the minority universities and colleges? If any university reserves a certain percentage for local students or internal students, it will continue to do that.
The only difference is that these students will also have to come through CUET like students that will be admitted in general seats. The reservation policies and ordinances of the universities will remain unchanged.
