Central Government has decided to continue the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship scheme (NMMSS) for students in the economically weaker section for five years. The scholarship is awarded to meritorious students in the EWS section in Class 8. The main objective of NMMSS is to halt the drop-out rate in Class 8 Students. The continuation of this scheme aims to encourage and provide Class 8 students with financial support so that they can complete their education till Class 12.
The objective of the scheme is to award scholarships to meritorious EWS students to arrest their drop-out at Class 8 and encourage them to continue their education at secondary stage. One lakh fresh scholarships of Rs 12,000 per annum (Rs 1,000 per month) per student are awarded to selected students of Class 9 every year and their continuation or renewal in Classes 10 to 12 for study in state government, government-aided and local body schools under the scheme.
Students who appear for NMMS exam are then awarded the Means-cum-Merit scholarship scheme. Class 9 students who are selected through the NMMS exam are then awarded scholarships every year to continue their education till Class 12. The scholarship amount is directly sent into the bank accounts of students by electronic transfer through Public Financial Management System (PFMS). 100% of the funds under the scheme are provided by the Central Government. This year a budget of Rs. 1.827 crore has been provided for the continuation of the scheme.
The government has proposed to provide scholarships to at least 14.76 lakh students and a financial outlay of Rs 1,827.00 crore has been approved for the NMMS scheme. The Centre approved NMMSS for a period of five years. Revised Guidelines for NMMSS have been issued by the central government and the main change is that the income ceiling has been increased from Rs 1.5 lakh per annum to Rs 3.5 lakh per annum. The scheme will continue till 2027.
