The Ministry of Education introduced the PM Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Scheme, a central sector scholarship program for college and university students.
This initiative provides an excellent opportunity for students seeking higher education, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.
The scheme is designed to enhance access to quality education and reduce financial barriers for deserving candidates.
Approximately 82,000 new scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs at recognized colleges and universities each year.
The selection process is based on the candidates’ Class 12 exam scores. The program also includes professional courses in engineering, medicine, and related fields.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must score above the 80th percentile in their respective streams in Class 12 of the 10+2 pattern or its equivalent from the relevant Board of Examination.
- Candidates should be enrolled in standard degree programs at universities or institutions recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education and the appropriate regulatory authorities.
- The applicant’s family income must be Rs 4,50,000 per year.
- To renew the scholarship each year, students must achieve at least 50% in their annual exams and maintain a minimum % attendance rate of 75%. Additionally, bank accounts should be opened in the student’s names.
Ineligibility Criteria
Students enrolled in diploma programs or those pursuing correspondence or remote learning are not eligible for the scholarship.
Students currently benefiting from other scholarship programs, such as state-run initiatives or fee waiver and reimbursement schemes, are also ineligible.

Students who want to apply for the scholarship scheme must submit the following documents.
- Bank Passbook for filling in bank details
- Aadhaar Number
- Parental Income Certificate
- E-mail ID
- Caste Certificate, wherever required
- Disability Certificate, wherever required
PM Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Scheme: How to Apply
- Visit the applicant login page of the National Scholarships Portal at scholarships.gov.in.
- Register by entering the required details. After registration, you will receive a Password and Application ID.
- Click “Login” after entering your details and Captcha.
- Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. The Password Reset screen will appear. Create a new, easy-to-remember password.
- Click “Submit.” You will then be directed to the “Applicant’s Dashboard.”
- Select “Application Form,” fill in the required information, and attach the necessary documents. The Digilocker service will verify your credentials, including caste and educational background.
- Finally, click ‘Submit’ and save the form for future reference.
This initiative’s primary objective is to bridge the educational access gap for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
By alleviating financial burdens, the program ensures that more students can complete their education and contribute meaningfully to society.
It also supports the government’s goal of establishing an inclusive and equitable educational system.
