Balbharati is state bureau of textbooks open its doors to the general public. With this, the Pune-based bureau which produces textbooks for all state government schools, has allowed people to go through its massive collection in eight languages – Marathi, Urdu, Hindi, English, Telugu, Kannad, Sindhi and Gujarati at a nominal fee of Rs 20 a day.
The Balbharati library belonging to the Maharashtra State Textbook Production and Curriculum Research Board , which until recently was accessible only to experts, the board of studies and the concerned text book bureau has opened its collection of 1,55,000 books to the public. The library will now be open to the public from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm and 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm except on weekends and public holidays.
The collection boasts of a chemistry textbook from 1823, a collection of maps that show the ever-evolving geographical history of India and world, reference books of different subjects and several sets of encyclopedia. It also includes national and international magazines for children, maps, and other educational materials including reference books on different subjects.
The library was open to public in 1967, however, was later pertained only to researchers and experts related to board of studies. Now Officials have opened this library as a reference cell for public to come and browse the various titles and books. Maharashtra even have textbooks from 1820’s which are quite interesting.

Balbharati was started in 1967 but textbooks were available for many years before that. An old textbook of mathematics shows how the subject was taught at a time when mathematics tables of fractions, such as Pavki (1/4ths), Nimki (1/2s), Didki (1-1/2s) were used in sums. One can also see the evolution of new subjects such as computers, and the environment. This isn’t a mere peek into history for the sake of nostalgia but a huge treasure which Balbhari has preserved for so many years.
Along with textbooks from Maharashtra, those from other states are also available for reference. This is a great opportunity for researchers, teachers, and even interested students. Until now, this collection was available only for members of Balbharati who work on curriculum development. It was a place for their research. But now, all will have access to this at Pune office.
This vast collection has over 1.55 lakh textbooks. Then there are research books, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, children’s literature, and a range of rare books.
The library, situated in the Balbharati premises at Senapati Bapat road, has a vast collection of 1,55,000 books and textbooks in Marathi, English, Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, Sindhi, Telugu and Urdu languages; various reference books, fine literature, glossary, encyclopedia, geographical encyclopedia, maps, among others.
Also, the library has a collection of national and international periodicals, textbooks from other states, educational and literary journals and their volumes, as well as many rare books. Pune has 1,000 libraries with 90 libraries and reading rooms in the city registered with Pune district library.
This library will help students to exchange ideas. To attract more such readers to the library, Balbharati is charging a fee of ₹20 per day. The purpose of the library was mainly to provide reference material for the courses prepared in the textbook circles, for research and for limited study by teachers and textbook lovers.
