ISRO Young Scientist Programme (Yuva Vigyani Karyakram – YUVIKA) 2020 for School Students. ISRO is planning to conduct a special programme for school students called Young Scientist Programme (YUva VIgyani KAryakram – YUVIKA ) from this year onwards.
Online Registration and Submission of signed applications extended up to March 05, 2020. The Yuva Vigyani Karyakram Program is primarily aimed at imparting basic knowledge on space technology, space science and space applications to the younger ones with the intent of arousing their interest in the emerging areas of space activities.
The YUVIKA program is aimed at creating awareness about the emerging trends in science and technology amongst the youngsters who are the future building blocks of our nation. This also expected to encourage more students to pursue in Science, Technology, Engineering and – Mathematics (STEM) based research/career.
Indian Space Research Organization, ISRO is going to organise the Young Scientist Programme 2020 or Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA) 2020 this year also. The programme was organized last year to encourage scientific curiosity in the school children to which it received an overwhelming response. This year also, ISRO is planning a phase 2 of the same programme in extension to last year’s YUVIKA 2019.
Young Scientist Programme 2020 Important dates

Who can Apply for Young Scientist Programme 2020: All students who have completed their 8th and are currently pursuing 9th grade are eligible to apply for the programme. The students can belong to CBSE, ICSE or any state board that is recognised by the Government of India. Class 8 and Class 10 students are not eligible to apply for the exam. Also, 60% weightage will be given to candidate’s 8th standard marks, his/her NCC participation, his/her district or state level participations etc. Moreover, 15% benefit will be available to all rural children.

Young Scientist Programme Details: The programme will be held in ISRO or DOS centres located in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Shillong or Trivandrum. There will be no fee levied on the candidates who wish to apply for the programme and those selected for the programme will be accommodated in ISRO guest houses and all their expenditures like travel, food, course material etc will be borne by ISRO.

Selection Method: The selection is based on the 8th Standard academic performance and extracurricular activities. The selection criteria is given below.

- Who are eligible for the YUVIKA programme?
Students who have completed 8th Standard and currently studying in 9th Standard (the Academic year 2019-20, from ICSE, CBSE and State Syllabus) are eligible for the YUVIKA Young Scientist programme
- Where do I need to send the YUVIKA applications?
The selection will be done through online registration. The interested students can register online through ISRO website www.isro.gov.in from February 03, 2020, to March 02, 2020. the YUVIKA application should be made online only and the selection is done by ISRO
- I am from Rural Area, whether I get Rural student benefit?
To get the Rural student benefit, the school, where you are studying should be located in the Block/village Panchayat area and school Head Master should certify for it.
- When is the YUVIKA programme planned?
The YUVIKA Young Scientist programme will be held from 11 to 22, May 2020. In case of any change in the programme schedule, it will be informed later to the selected candidates.
- When and where I need to report?
The selected candidates will be informed to report to anyone centres of ISRO/DOS located at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Shillong or Thiruvananthapuram
- I am in 8th Standard now, can I apply?
No, All students who have completed their 8th Class and are currently pursuing 9th class are eligible to apply for the YUVIKA programme.

The medium of instruction is English for the YUVIKA Young Scientist programme
- I am an Overseas Citizen of India. Whether I can apply for the YUVIKA programme?
Overseas Citizen of India, who are studying in India in 9th standard during the academic year 2019-20 are eligible for the YUVIKA programme. OCI certificate issued by Government of India to be uploaded, when it is asked to do so.
- What is the selection criteria?
The selection criteria are as mentioned below in the section of the selection procedure.
- Is there any fee to be paid by the candidate to attend the programme?
No fee is involved. The selected students will be accommodated in ISRO guest houses/hostels. Expenditure towards the travel of student (II AC fare by train from nearest Railway Station to the reporting centre and back), course material, lodging and boarding etc., during the entire course, will be borne by ISRO. II AC fare will also be provided to one guardian/parent for drop and pick up of student from the reporting centre.
- Whether my parent/guardian can stay with me in ISRO Guesthouse/hostel if I am selected?
- Whether a lady ISRO/DOS official will be available in the Guesthouse/Hostel, where girl students are accommodated?

We have a great pleasure to inform you that Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to conduct a special programme for school students called Young Scientist Programme (YUva Vigyani KAryakram – YUVIKA ) from this year onwards,
This is in tune with the Government’s vision “Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan”. The Program is primarily aimed at imparting basic knowledge on space technology, space science and space applications to the younger ones with the intent of arousing their interest in the emerging areas of space activities. The program is thus aimed at creating awareness about the emerging trends in science and technology amongst the youngsters who are the future building blocks of our nation. This also expected to encourage more students to pursue in Science, Technology, Engineering and – Mathematics (STEM) based research/career.
The programme will be of around two weeks duration during summer holidays and the schedule will include invited talks, experience sharing by the eminent scientists, facility and lab visits, exclusive sessions for discussions with experts, practical and feedback sessions.
It is proposed to select 3 students from each State/ Union Territory to participate in this programme every year. Those who have finished 8th standard and currently studying in 9th standard will be eligible for the programme. The selection should be based on the following criteria. In case there is a tie between the selected candidates, the younger candidates to be given priority.
1. Performance in the 8th Std Examination = 50%
2. Membership of Science Club/Space Club = 5%
3. Prize in any school-based individual extracurricular activity= 2/4/6/10%
(Elocution/Debate/Essay Writing, science quiz, computer modelling, scientific prototype model making, etc.,) at District/State/National/ International Level (The higher level will be considered for weightage)
4. Winners of District/State/National/International Level _ sports activities (The higher level will be considered for weightage) = 2/4/6/10%
5. Scouts and Guides/NCC/NSS Member = 5%
6. Studying in Village/Rural School (Certificate of proof to this effect to be produced from the head of the school Criteria: The school, where the candidate is studying should be located in Panchayath Area) = 20%

Expenditure: Expenditure towards the travel of student (II AC fare by train from nearest Rly Station to the reporting centre and back), course material, lodging and boarding etc., during the entire course will be borne by ISRO. In this regard, would be grateful if you could kindly arrange to select 3 candidates covering CBSE, ICSE and State syllabus stream from your State for the programme based on the above criteria.
