The NMMS scholarship aims to prevent the drop-out of students after class 8 and encourage them to continue their education at the secondary stage. One lakh fresh scholarships are awarded to selected students from class 9 every year and their continuation/ renewal in classes 10 to 12 for students studying in state government, government-aided and local body schools.
The amount of the scholarship under National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme is Rs 12,000 per annum. NMMSS scholarships are disbursed directly into the bank accounts of selected students by electronic transfer through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) following DBT mode. The Merit scholarship is provided by the Centre.
Students whose parental income from all sources is not more than Rs 3.50 lakh per annum are eligible to avail the scholarships. The students must have a minimum of 55 per cent marks or equivalent grade in class 7 examination for appearing in the selection test for award of scholarship (for SC/ST students it should be 50 per cent).
1,00,000 NMMS Scholarships: One lakh Scholarships: Under this NMMS scheme, 100,000 scholarships are awarded to the gifted or meritorious students whose parental income is not more than Rs.1,50,000/- per annum from all sources.
Each State /UT have fixed quota of scholarship as given at Annexure of concerned age group of class VII and VIII. The scheme would provide reservation to different categories of students as per the State/UT norms; as different States/UTs have their own norms of reservation.
NMMS Scholarship Amount Rs.12000/- per annum: These NMMS scholarships will be provided on yearly basis to the students studying as regular students in class IX in a Government, Government-aided and local body schools which will be renewed for classes X, XI and XII. Thus the NMMS scholarships will be for a maximum period of four years.
The amount of scholarship will be Rs.12000/- per annum @ Rs.1000 per month. A separate examination in the name of NMMS Exam shall be conducted by the State Governments/UT Administrations for selection of students for the award of the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarships in the States/UTs
Eligibility for NMMS Scholarship: To be eligible, an applicant must Be a student of Class 9. Have secured at least 55% of marks or equivalent grade in Class 8 examination (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST students).

The Ministry for Human Resource Development, Government of India has launched the centrally sponsored National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (N.M.M.S.S). Under this scheme, an examination will be conducted every year in the month of November for the students studying class VIII in Government/ Local Body/Municipal/Aided Schools/ Modal schools which have no residential facility(i.e. from non-Residential Schools only) and selected candidates are eligible for getting the scholarship.
Selection will be made as per the merit subject to district wise and community wise quota allotted as per norms issued by MHRD New Delhi. The selected beneficiaries should register and upload their Aadhar linked bank account particulars in National Scholarship Portal in stipulated time by opening the bank accounts in any nationalized bank which have online clearing system only to get scholarship Rs.12000 per year.
There is a quota of scholarships for different States/UTs. Students of NVS, KVS, Sainik schools and private schools are not entitled to the scholarships. Scholarships are disbursed by the State Bank of India directly by electronic transfer into the accounts of students through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).

NMMSS Scholarships: There is reservation as per State Government norms. The selection of students for the award of scholarships under the scheme is made through an examination conducted by the State Governments. The students shall have a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in Class VII examination for appearing in selection test for award of scholarship (Relaxable by 5% for SC/ST).
At the time of selection for the award of scholarship, the candidate must have scored at least 55% marks or equivalent grade in Class VIII examination. There will be 5 % relaxation for SC/ST. For continuing the scholarship in class X and XII, the awardees should get clear promotion from class IX to class X and from class XI to class XII in the first attempt with 55% marks (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST).
The students should continue their studies in Government, Government aided, local bodies i.e. ZP, municipal schools, and Modal schools which have no residential facility. The awardees must obtain a minimum of 60% marks in Class X (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST) examination or equivalent examination for continuation of the scholarship at the higher secondary stage.
The candidates who got minimum 55% of marks in case of OC/BC candidates and 50% in case of SC/ST in VII Standard and studying class VIII from above said schools with parental income by not exceeding Rs.3,50,000/- per annum. are eligible to apply for this examination.
Selection Procedure for NMMS Scholarship: Procedure for Selection of Awardee Students: Each State/UT conducts its own test for selection of students for the award of the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship. The State Level Examination consists of the following two tests. (i) Mental Ability Test (MAT) (ii) Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
The pattern of Examination is as follows: Mental Ability Test (M.A.T) – 90 marks multiple-choice questions. Scholastic Ability Test.(S.A.T) – 90 marks covering sciences, mathematics and social sciences of class VII & VIII. Each question carries one mark. Time is one minute for one question.
(i) Mental Ability Test (MAT): Mental Ability Test may consist of 90 multiple-choice questions testing verbal and non-verbal meta-cognitive abilities like reasoning and critical thinking. The questions in the test may be on analogy, classification, numerical series, pattern perception, hidden figure etc.
(ii) Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT): Scholastic Aptitude Test may consist of 90 multiple-choice questions covering subjects namely, science, social studies and mathematics as taught in classes VII and VIII.
Duration of the Test: Each test will be of 90 minutes duration. Children with disability will be given extra time, as applicable.
Declaration of NMMS Results: For selecting the students, the following conditions may apply. So The qualifying percentage is as follows: (i) The students must pass both the tests i.e. MAT and SAT with at least 40 % marks in aggregate taken together for these two tests. For the SC/ST students, this cut off will be 32% marks.
(ii) At the time of selection for the award of scholarship the student must have scored at least 55% mark or equivalent grade in Class VIII examination. There will be 5 % relaxation for SC/ST students. (iii) The awardees should satisfy the eligibilities and the conditions mentioned in the scheme.
NMMSS Exam Application Fee: For General & Backward Caste Students: Rs.100-00 AND For Scheduled Caste, Scheduled tribe & PH Students: Rs.50-00.
Steps to complete the NMMS Scholarship Registration 2023
All the qualified students are aware of the scholarships that are available on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP portal) and students fulfil the eligibility conditions specified, students can apply for them online. The given steps to be followed for making a successful application on the portal.

Click on New User? Register Link
Once you reach the official website, you click on the New User Registration link on the home page. Applicant should read and understood the guidelines for registration. After tick on the radio buttons, you can click on the Click on the Continue button.
Fill the Fresh Registration Form
After clicking on that link, a Fresh Registration form would be opened. Now, Select the Pre Matric for class 1 to 10 OR Select the Post Matric / MC/ Top Class for Class 11, 12, UG, PG etc., from the Scholarship Category and Select Scholarship Scheme if you want to apply for Scholarships OR Select Incentive Scheme if you want to apply for any incentive scheme and fill the form with required information and click on the register button.

After completion of new registration process, student will get a unique application ID and password through SMS on the provided (registered) mobile number. Now, you can click on the Login to Apply link on the home page. Then, Login for Fresh Application web page will appear in your device.
Enter Login details
In the login web page, student shall login to NSP using application ID and password which were received at the time of registration process and click on the login button. Here, the student must change the password upon first login. This password has to be kept safely and confidentially. The student can change the mobile number only before the first login, i.e. before changing the received password.
Click on the Application Form link
After clicking on the login button, an applicant dashboard will open. Now, click on the ‘Application Form’ to proceed with the scholarship application.
Fill the Application Form
After clicking on the application form link, application form web page will appear. The Application Form is divided into three Parts, i.e., Registration Details, Academic Details, Basic Details. Student should fill in all required details in the application form and Upload all supporting documents with the application form. Finally, click on the ‘Final Submit’ button.
Print the Application Form
After clicking on the submit button, your application will be submitted successfully. Now, print and save application form further reference.
Disbursement of NMMS Scholarships
A student can avail only one Scholarship under any scheme. The awardees will be required to open bank accounts preferably in SBI, or any public sector bank or any scheduled bank which has core banking facility. The State Governments / UT Administrations shall normally send the proposals/ list of beneficiaries on-line on the Scholarship Portal.
The Ministry will scrutinize the proposal and sanction funds from Annual Budget Provision for releasing them to SBI, the implementing bank for scheme for disbursal of scholarships to students directly into their bank accounts by electronic transfer. The awardees should get minimum of 55% marks in Class IX and XI and 60% in Class X for continuance of scholarship (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST candidates) in next higher classes.
SBI will ensure that the scholarship is paid to awardees in one go (Rs.12000) immediately after getting the funds and the lists from the Ministry. SBI will instruct some of its branches to coordinate with the State Education Department in connection with the payment of scholarships.
Eligibility Conditions
General Eligibility Conditions of NMMS Scheme: An awardee is eligible for the scholarship provided he/she:
- takes up studies in approved courses.
- maintains good conduct as certified by the Head of the College/Institution and continues his/her studies as a regular student in a Government/ Government-aided / Local Body school.
- does not absent himself/herself without proper leave. iv. takes up studies on a whole time basis.
- does not take up any job.
No scholarship shall be paid: No scholarship shall be available for studies abroad for any course. No claim for scholarship arrears will be entertained after the expiry of 12 months of the academic session for which one has applied for the claim. In case any awardee leaves his/her course of study within one month of registration/admission, no scholarship shall be paid to him/her.
If not Appear Annual Exam due to illness: In case awardee is not able to appear at the annual examination due to serious illness, one should send the medical certificate through the Head of the Institution within three months of one’s falling ill. The duration of illness should be clearly certified by a specialist, who is a Registered Medical Practitioner.
The facility will be available to the awardee to continue the same course in which one is studying provided the principal or the head of the institution certifies that the overall performance of the awardee during the year is 50% or above.
Must join the next class/desired course: The awardee must join the next class/desired course within 3 months of the declaration of the result of the previous class/course.
Scholarship shall be discontinued: Scholarship shall be deemed to be discontinued with any gap of one academic session in studies at any time due to any reason. Scholarship once discontinued on the basis of the rules of disbursement of scholarship cannot be revived under any circumstances. All rules are subject to change from time to time, as and when required, which will be binding on all awardees.
Other Conditions:
Eligibility and other conditions for starting and continuing of Scholarship at Secondary and Higher Secondary Stage. The awardees should get clear promotion from class VIII to Class IX for being eligible for starting the scholarship.
The scholarship at the secondary and higher secondary stage or equivalent classes IX to XII is payable for a maximum period of four years for studies in India only. No scholarship at this stage is payable for studying diploma/certificate level courses.
Scholarship Renewal that means for continuing the scholarship in class X and XII, the awardees should get clear promotion from class IX to class X and from class XI to class XII in the first attempt with 55% marks (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST students)
The awardees must obtain a minimum of 60 per cent marks in Class X (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST students) examination or equivalent examination for continuation of the scholarship at higher secondary stage.
In case an institution/school does not conduct an examination at the end of Class IX and / or Class XI, the scholarship for the second year will be continued on the submission of a certificate to this effect from the Head of the Institution/School.
The scheme will be further in operation beyond March from the financial year and the selection test for the awarded of scholarship will be conducted for Class VII students in November every year as a separate test by the State Governments/UT Administrations.
A Technical Support Group (TSG) consisting of Consultants / support staff etc. may be constituted for assisting in effective implementation and monitoring of the scheme.
