Due to the nationwide lockdown as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the temporary shut down of offline classes in schools, students had to shift to digital education. The Central government launched the PM eVidya programme in 2023 to boost online learning.
It consists of six components, four with school education and two with higher education. The programme is available on the official website of Swayam Prabha.
‘One nation, one digital platform’ and ‘one class one channel’ will ensure reach of quality education to farthest corners of the country.
So, PM eVidya Service or PM eVidya Programme is an Online Learning Platform launched to promote online education across the country. It consists of four divisions. There are four divisions for school education and two divisions for higher education.
These programs are available on the official website of Swayam Prabha. The central government is also running PM e-Vidya through a special radio podcast for the visually impaired.
As well as providing education through a TV channel for those who do not have internet facility. There are also two portals under the PM e-Vidya Pragramme i.e., DIKSHA and NISHTHA
This will enable multi-mode access to education, and includes: DIKSHA (one nation-one digital platform) which will now become the nation’s digital infrastructure for providing quality e-content in school education for all the states/UTs; TV (one class-one channel) where one dedicated channel per grade for each of the classes 1 to 12 will provide access to quality educational material.

The initiative aims to encourage technology-driven education with equity post-Covid as a part of Aatma Nirbhar Apna Bharat programme. PM eVidya service will provide students across the country multi-mode access to online education.
DIKSHA: Through the Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing or DIKSHA that will give ‘one nation, one digital platform’ for school education in states and union territories: It will provide e- content and QR coded energised textbooks for all grades.
students are provided NCERT, NIOS, CBSE books, and related topics online. Students can access the portal’s 2,685 courses by scanning the QR code on the app.
This will benefit nearly 25 crore school going children across the country. DIKSHA has content in 14 languages – Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Chhattisgarhi.
In addition to this, 34 new DTH channels will be introduced as a part of the program with the idea of one class one channel, which means there will be a dedicated channel for class 1 to class 12.
The programme will also include special e-content for visually and hearing-impaired people. Apart from this, top 100 universities were allowed to start online courses by May 30, 2020, which will include IITs, IIMs, institutes of eminence and national institutes.

PM eVidya is a unique and innovative venture by the Ministry of Education, Government of India to facilitate multi-mode access to digital/online teaching-learning contents of various types among students and teachers.
The uniqueness of the PM e-Vidya lies with its comprehensive accessibility for all as it caters the education content to all with its multi-mode set-up of remote learning platforms including internet, radio, community radio, podcast, and TV.
One of the major initiatives of PM eVidya is 12 eVidya TV Channels based on the line of One Class-One Channel for class 1 to 12 to air educational content related to the respective classes. 12 eVidya DTH channels are especially useful for the learners of those remote areas where stable internet is not available.
These channels telecast curriculum based educational contents developed by NCERT and other agencies such as CBSE, KVS, NIOS, Rotary, etc.

NISHTHA: The National Initiative for School Heads’ and Teachers’ Holistic Advancement, NISHTHA programme aims to improve the learning outcomes at the elementary level through an integrated teacher training initiative. It is available in 11 languages so far. Comprising of 23,85,378 teachers, NISHTHA witnessed 5,16,83,385 enrollments in the last one year.
Mental counselling program: PM e-Vidya has also launched a psychosocial support channel, Manodarpan for students and teachers, where they will receive mental counselling and guidance. It consists of 308 live sessions as well as 45 live sessions of teaching-learning interventions for inclusive classrooms.
The PM e-Vidya programme has made joined hands with private DTH operators like Tata Sky and Airtel to provide education videos. Besides, around 200 new textbooks will be added to ePathshala, a portal/app developed by the CIET, and NCERT to provide multiple resources to teachers, parents, educators, and students.
