Fellowships to students for pursuing M.Phil and PhD Courses. Various schemes provide financial assistance to students for pursuing higher studies courses of M.Phil and Ph.D in India.
The candidate should have passed the Post-Graduation examination for being eligible for the Fellowship. The candidate should get admission and registration for regular and full time M.Phil / Ph.D Courses in Indian Universities / Institutions / Colleges. The fellowship shall be payable once the student has secured admission and started the research work.
The starting date of fellowship for the selection year is the date from which they have taken admission/joining in M.Phil/PhD course.
New Students are required to apply online for the first time and need to “Register” on the National Fellowship Scholarship Portal by filling “Student Registration Form”. After successful login details, a text message will be sent to the registered e-mail address.
There are a variety of fellowships in India offered by government departments, private organizations and reputed colleges/institutions of higher education.
These can be broadly categorized into Junior Research Fellowships (JRF), Senior Research Fellowships (SRF), and Post-Doctoral Fellowships.

University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited applications from eligible candidates for five recently-launched fellowship schemes and research grants. Many scholarships and fellowships are provided by the Ministry of Social Empowerment and Welfare, Government of India for the talented students of backward and scheduled castes and scheduled tribes so that they can fulfill their dream of higher studies.
Financial problems should not become an obstacle in this path. Hence, today, we have curated a list of fellowships and scholarships available for SC, ST and OBC category students.
a) RAJIV GANDHI NATIONAL FELLOWSHIP
This fellowship is available to SC, ST scholars doing MPhil and PhD. This covers tuition fees and living expenses. Under Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship, those doing MPhil/PhD in Science, Humanities, and Social Sciences get a fellowship of Rs 31,000 per month for the first two years and Rs 35,000 per month for the remaining 3 years.
b) National Fellowship for SC, ST and OBC
This fellowship is also available to scholars doing MPhil and PhD in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Under this fellowship, JRF gets Rs 37,000 per month and SRF gets Rs 42,000 per month. This fellowship is available for five years.
c) National Overseas Scholarship
This scholarship is for SC and ST students wishing to study in America and UK. In this, students studying in America get a scholarship of 15,400 pounds and those studying in Britain get a 9,900 pounds scholarship. In the year 2025-23, this scholarship was provided to 125 students.
d) Post Matric Scholarship for SC
This scholarship is provided to four types of students:
Group 1 includes those students who are doing graduating in medicine, engineering, technology, agriculture, etc. Have taken admission in PG Diploma in Management, Medicine, CA/ICWA/CS/ICFA or MPhil, PhD and Post Doctoral programs.
They get Rs 1200 per month for 10 months. Hostellers get an allowance of Rs 550 and visually impaired people get an allowance of Rs 240. A total of 8773 vacancies will be filled under this recruitment drive.
Group 2 includes those students who are doing a degree or diploma in professional fields like pharmacy and nursing. In this, an allowance of Rs 820 per month is given for 10 months, hostellers get Rs 530 and visually impaired people get Rs 240.
Group 3 includes those graduation and post-graduation courses which are not covered in Group-1 and 2. In this, a scholarship of Rs 570 per month is given to hostelers, an allowance of Rs 300 and visually impaired people get a Rs 200 allowance.
Group 4 includes students studying in intermediate or class 12. They get a scholarship of Rs 380 per month, a hostel allowance of Rs 230, and a reader allowance of Rs 160 for the visually impaired.
c) Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for SC Students
Another scholarship is provided to SC students by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. Its purpose is to provide meritorious students of the SC category pursuing professional courses like engineering, medicine, and management. Under this, a scholarship of up to Rs 2 lakh per year is provided to the students studying in the private sector.
