Government departments offer a number of scholarships exclusively for SC category students to provide them with equal opportunities of education. The key objective of such scholarships is to provide suitable financial assistance to meritorious and disadvantaged students. List of top scholarships for SC category students

Various scholarships are provided to the students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SCs) to ensure that education is not denied due to the poor financial condition of their families. These Scholarships are provided at both pre-matric and post-matric levels. Scholarships are also provided to SC students for obtaining higher education in India and abroad, including premier educational institutions. The Scholarships can broadly be classified into the following three types:

Top Class Education Scheme for SC Students

Top Class Education for Scheduled Caste Students: The objective of the Scheme is to promote qualitative education amongst students belonging to Scheduled Castes, by providing full financial support for pursuing studies beyond 12th class, in notified institutes of excellence like IITs, NITs,  IIMs, reputed Medical/Law and other institutions. Scholarship is awarded to the eligible SC students on securing admission in any of the institutions notified by the Ministry.

Through this scheme, a total 1,500 scholarships are disbursed every year to SC category students who have completed class 12 and have taken admission in a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course (through general selection criteria prescribed by respective institutions).

The annual income of the family should be less than Rs.6 lakh from all sources.

Post Graduate Scholarship for Professional Courses for SC/ST

This scholarship offers financial aid to SC/ST students pursuing professional courses at postgraduate level. To be eligible for this scholarship, the candidates must be pursuing the first year of a professional course during the current academic year at a recognised institution/ college/ university. A total of 1,000 students can avail benefits under this scholarship scheme.

  • Eligibility: SC/ST students studying in the first year of professional course at PG level
  • Award details: Up to Rs 7,800 per month
  • Application mode: Online through the National Scholarship Portal
  • Application timeline: Between December and January (tentative)

PMS SC

The Central government announced two scholarship schemes for students belonging to the Schedule Caste category. These scholarships were announced by the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment. The central government will provide SC Students with two major scholarships i.e., (a) Pre Matric Scholarship Scheme and Post Matric Scholarship Scheme (PMS-SC). Under these two schemes, scholarships are provided to SC students having parental income less than Rs 2 lakh or 2.5 lakh per annum. The Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme for SC students provides academic allowance to eligible students studying in Classes 9 and 10. The Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for SC students provides academic allowance to eligible students studying in Classes 11 and 12.

Pre Matric Scholarship for SC Students (Class 9, 10)

Under this scholarship, the SC category students of Delhi who are studying in class 9 and 10 can avail variable benefits. The applicants must be pursuing their studies at a government school or a school recognised by the government of central/state board of secondary education. The annual family income of the applicant should be less than Rs 2.5 lakh from all sources. This scholarship is offered by different state governments for students of their respective states.

Pre-Matric Scholarships: These are summarised below: 1. Pre Matric Scholarship to SC Student: The objective of the pre-matric Scheme is to support the parents of SC children for educating their wards, so that the incidence of drop outs at this stage is minimized.

2. Pre-Matric Scholarship to the Children of those engaged in occupations involving cleaning and prone to health hazards: This is also a centrally sponsored scheme, which is implemented by the State Governments and Union Territory Administrations, which receive 100% central assistance from the Government of India for the total expenditure under the scheme, over and above their respective Committed Liability. The scheme was started in 1977-78.

Post Matric Scholarship for SC Students

Post Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Caste Students (PMS-SC): The Scheme is the single largest intervention by Government of India for educational empowerment of scheduled caste students. The Scheme is in operation since 1944. This is a centrally sponsored scheme. 100% central assistance is released to State Governments/UTs for expenditure incurred by them under the scheme over and above their respective committed liability.

The SC category students of Delhi who are pursuing their studies at post-matriculation level can avail benefits under this scholarship. They must be studying at a government recognised institution within India. Their annual family income should be less than Rs 2.5 lakh from all sources. Just like the pre-matric scholarship, this scholarship is also offered by various state governments for SC category students of their respective states.

  • Eligibility: SC category students pursuing studies from Class 11 onwards
  • Award details: Up to Rs 1,200 per month
  • Application mode: Online through e-district portal of Government of NCT of Delhi
  • Application timeline: Between December and February (tentative)

National Fellowship: The Scheme provides financial assistance to SC students for pursuing research studies leading to M.Phil, Ph.D and equivalent research degrees.

National Overseas Scholarship Scheme for SC Students

National Overseas Scholarship: The Scheme provides assistance to students belonging to SCs, de-notified, nomadic, semi-nomadic tribes etc for pursuing higher studies of Master level courses and PhD programmes abroad.

This scholarship aims to support the higher education of students belonging to SC, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribe, Landless Agricultural Labourers and Traditional Artisan categories, who are willing to pursue master’s and PhD level courses abroad.

The annual income of the family should be less than Rs 8 lakh from all sources. The age of the applicants should be below 35 years. Also, they are required to obtain at least 60 per cent marks or equivalent grade in the qualifying examination.

  • Eligibility: Students belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribe, Landless Agricultural Labourers and Traditional Artisan categories

ONGC Scholarship to Meritorious SC/ST Students

Open to Indian nationals, this scholarship offers financial assistance to SC/ST category students who are studying in the first year of a professional course like Graduate Engineering, MBBS, Master’s in Geology/Geophysics, and MBA.

They must have secured at least 60 per cent marks or 6.5 CGPA/ OGPA (on a 10-point scale) in their qualifying examination. The age of the applicant must be below 30 years and their annual family income should not exceed Rs 4.50 lakh from all sources.

  • Provider details: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited
  • Eligibility: SC/ST students pursuing UG/PG courses
  • Award details: Scholarship worth Rs 48,000 per annum
  • Application mode: Offline by post to designated office address of ONGC
  • Application timeline: Between September and October (tentative).

Free Coaching for SC and OBC Students:

The objective of the Scheme is to provide coaching of good quality for economically disadvantaged SC and OBC candidates to enable them to appear in competitive examinations and succeed in obtaining an appropriate job in Public/Private sector.

The Scheme provides central assistance to institutions/centres run by the Central/State Governments/UT Administrations, Central/ State Universities, PSUs, Registered Private Institutions, NGOs, etc.

Coaching is provided for Group ‘A’ & ‘B’ examinations conducted by the UPSC, SSC, various Railway Recruitment Boards and State PSCs; Officers’ Grade examinations conducted by Banks, Insurance Companies and PSUs; and Premier Entrance examinations for admission in Engineering, Medical and Professional courses like Management, Law etc.,

Steps to complete the SC Scholarship Registration 2023

All the SC students are aware of the scholarships that are available on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP portal) and students fulfil the eligibility conditions specified, students can apply for them online. The given steps to be followed for making a successful application on the portal.

  1. Visit the scholarships.gov.in Website

    Students need to visit the official website of the NSP portal, https://scholarships.gov.in in your device browser.

  2. Click on New User? Register Link

    Once you reach the official website, you click on the New User Registration link on the home page. Applicant should read and understood the guidelines for registration. After tick on the radio buttons, you can click on the Click on the Continue button.

  3. Fill the Fresh Registration Form

    After clicking on that link, a Fresh Registration form would be opened. Now, Select the Pre Matric for class 1 to 10 OR Select the Post Matric / MC/ Top Class for Class 11, 12, UG, PG etc., from the Scholarship Category and Select Scholarship Scheme if you want to apply for Scholarships OR Select Incentive Scheme if you want to apply for any incentive scheme and fill the form with required information and click on the register button.

  4. Click on Login to Apply Link

    After completion of new registration process, student will get a unique application ID and password through SMS on the provided (registered) mobile number. Now, you can click on the Login to Apply link on the home page. Then, Login for Fresh Application web page will appear in your device.

  5. Enter Login details

    In the login web page, student shall login to NSP using application ID and password which were received at the time of registration process and click on the login button. Here, the SC student must change the password upon first login. This password has to be kept safely and confidentially. The SC student can change the mobile number only before the first login, i.e. before changing the received password.

  6. Click on the Application Form link

    After clicking on the login button, an applicant dashboard will open. Now, click on the ‘Application Form’ to proceed with the scholarship application.

  7. Fill the Application Form

    After clicking on the application form link, application form web page will appear. The Application Form is divided into three Parts, i.e., Registration Details, Academic Details, Basic Details. SC Student should fill in all required details in the application form and Upload all supporting documents with the application form. Finally, click on the ‘Final Submit’ button.

  8. Print the Application Form


    After clicking on the submit button, your application will be submitted successfully. Now, print and save application form further reference.

  1. What is Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for SC Students?

    Post Matric Scholarship scheme is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme. The aim for the scheme is to provide financial assistance to SC students studying at post matriculation, Classes 11 and 12. The scheme aims to enable them to complete their education. SC Students whose family income is less than Rs 2.5 Lakhs per annum are eligible to apply for the scheme.

  2. What is Pre Matric Scholarship Scheme for SC Students?

    The Pre Matric Scholarship Scheme aims to provide scholarships to SC students whose annual parental income is less than Rs 2 lakhs per annum or does not exceed Rs. 2.5 lakhs per annum. The aim of this scheme is to prevent students from dropping out of school after Grade 8 and help them complete their education in Classes 9 and 10. The Union Minister of MoSJE also added that the Post Matric scheme provides compulsory non-refundable fees, including the tuition fee of the course and academic allowance to students studying at the post-matric stage, that is Class 11 and onwards.
